Trust & Transparency
Why we build local-first software and how we protect taxpayer data dignity.
Our Security & Privacy Pillars
TAXEM rejects the modern model of corporate tax software that traps user data in the cloud to fuel tracking, cross-selling, and database lock-in. Instead, we design software that treats personal tax returns as private local ledgers.
1. Local-First Control
TAXEM is designed to compile and run entirely on your local machine. Your personal information, T4/Relevé slips, and calculations never upload to our servers.
2. Explicit Transparency
Every computed value on our ledger can be clicked to inspect its underlying formula, legal references, and dual-jurisdiction variables.
3. Zero Predatory Upsells
There are no premium paywalls for specific tax credits, no hidden fees for claiming deductions, and no manipulative interface loops.
Taxpayer Data Protections
We build architectural guardrails to guarantee security boundaries are respected. As we move closer to formal certification phases, the software implements:
- SIN Display Masking: In compliance with CRA security expectations, the first five digits of your Social Insurance Number are automatically masked (e.g.,
***-***-567) on-screen and on printed records to prevent shoulder-surfing and identity theft. - Secured Environment: The software operates in a sandboxed runtime environment, storing data strictly in encrypted local configuration directories.
- Compliance Alignment: We design our software to follow the Tax Filer Electronic Connection (TFEC) Code of Conduct and Québec’s Law 25 (Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector) regarding regional data storage and data custody boundaries.
Open Source Civic Tech
TAXEM believes that democratic tools should be transparent. Our code, test suites, and parameter configurations are open-source. This allows developers, security auditors, and citizens to inspect and compile the software independently, ensuring that the engine computes returns honestly and without bias.
